April Fools Day…Waiting for the punch line!
Today has been a very interesting day. It was April Fools Day, and I kept waiting for the punch line with each moment of the day, but the punch line never really came!
It wasn’t a bad day….well… not really. If you don’t count the hour that I overslept, or the stomach ache that Garrett had when he woke up this morning only to pass it on to me this afternoon, and then there was the wreck that Arron had…. It wasn’t a bad day…. just a different day….
After many doses of Imodium and several redemption’s of Rock Band on the drums courtesy of XBox 360, Garrett decided that he wanted to go to school and I was really ready for him to do so! (you can only listen so long to drums!)
The “different” part of the day really started when I returned home from dropping Garrett off at school and I walked in to the phone ringing. The caller was from The Leonard Lopate Show in New York City. They had heard our story on This American Life and were interested in talking with me about doing a possible show with them. I browsed around their site a bit and was impressed with the guests they have on their show. If anyone knows anything (positive or negative) about this show, I would be interested in hearing about it!
The day progressed as usual, or for me what is “usual”. With our conference planning, of course I am up to my elbows in details! But, there is also a very special announcement that I am going to make this Friday and in the midst of that, I have been very busy preparing. If you follow me on twitter (left hand column) or on Facebook you have seen that I have been dropping a few clues about this announcement. Actually, I have 2 announcements I am going to make on Friday! (One for sure and hopefully I will have news about the other one to share)
Then, because there is NEVER a dull moment in my household…. I got a call from my eldest son Arron. You have to understand that Arron lives by Murphy’s Law. “What can go wrong, Will go wrong!” Arron always has something interesting happening and now with his job as a “Critter Catcher” he always has wild stories to tell.
Today, after capturing a baby raccoon out of someone’s ceiling, he and “Sadie” traveled around from job to job relocating animals to a better habitat. “Sadie” loved Arron immediately and crawled up on his shoulder to cuddle while he drove. Later in the afternoon “Sadie” slept on the front seat of Arron’s truck while he was driving to a different job when a car full of elderly ladies pulled directly in front of Arron’s truck. Doing his best to avoid them, he slammed on his brakes, but quickly realized that he was definitely going to hit them and he knew if he did, they would be badly injured. So, he swerved to avoid them and hit another truck in the lane next to him. “Sadie” fell to the floorboard and was none too happy about being woke up in such a way! As he came to a stop and checked his new baby (who was upset but fine) the lady looked at him and drove away! He made sure the man in the truck was OK (who insisted that Arron not call the police) and then drove to stop the lady. Thankfully, she was stopped at a light and he was able to call the police.
The lady insisted that none of it was her fault and one of the passengers saw “Sadie” in the truck, who was loudly complaining about the whole situation, and exclaimed that if she were a little bit bigger they could have Dinner! The man wound up not having a valid Driver’s License and shouldn’t have been driving in the first place. The police took down all the details and agreed that the woman was “probably” at fault after taking all the witnesses information, but they couldn’t give her a ticket until the investigated it further.
Arron and “Sadie” are home safe tonight and I guess she has joined his other baby raccoon that he has been feeding. The important note here is to know that raccoons should not be kept as pets. Arron will not keep these raccoons. He is just waiting for them to get bigger and then he will give them to a man who makes sure they can live in the wild.
I know this post had nothing to do with Down syndrome or mosaic Down syndrome. But, it goes to show that even when you have a child with a special need, Life Goes On! You still do all the things you would have done without extra chromosomes in your family! You still have other kids and they still have crazy lives! When your child has Down syndrome or mosaic Down syndrome, this is not the end of what you do in your life. Things are different, but as you can see by my day, things are always “different” no matter who your kids are!
