Roadmap to Holland

Jennifer Graf Groneberg wrote a book Road Map to Holland. I am probably one of the few people who have not had the opportunity to read the book. Hopefully soon I will. I have heard many wonderful things about it and looking at Jennifer’s blog today, I can see the fan base that is growing rapidly.

“Welcome to Holland” by Emily Pearl Kingsley has always been a steadfast hold that parents of children with Special Needs have clinged to in the midst of the confusion when first receiving the news that their child will be a little different. I can remember a few down times in my life over the years, where I wanted to give up and said that I was tired of living in Holland and how I really wanted to just go back to the fast paced world of Italy.

These were fleeting moments, everyone has them, but I quickly recovered when reminded of the beautiful tulips or the wonderful windmills that Holland boasts. And, besides, being a person who lives in both Italy and Holland, I know that sometimes Holland is a much better place! You know what is so funny about the whole analogy? As a child, when ever I drew a picture there were always plenty of tulips and a beautiful windmill!

Jennifer has a great blog called Pinwheels . She explains the reason she calls her blog Pinwheels is because,

“Pinwheels make me think of Avery. When the breeze picks up and they begin to spin, catching colors from the sky, reflecting the sun, the colors of the garden, the fading tulips and the lilacs just in bloom, I remember Avery when he was 2. He could watch a pinwheel for hours, but of course the wind never lasted that long. Avery is my second son, a fraternal twin, born early on the first Sunday in June. At 5 days old, he was diagnosed with Down syndrome.

Avery is 5, now. Each morning, he wakes and finds me; the day doesn’t begin until we’ve hugged. He is my summer boy, my Sunday’s child, and my life with him is full of grace.”

Today, Jennifer put up a great video on her blog . I wanted to share that with you here.

Thank you Jennifer for sharing your life with so many and providing this very special Roadmap to Holland.

thank you for this lovely post! i had to laugh at “fan base”–for so long, it’s been “my mother.”

would you like me to send you a copy of road map? you could read it and then donate it to your library, or pass it along to someone else…let me know.

thanks again for the post, and the laugh!
