31 for 21: Meet Teagan
Today, Charlene is sharing her story with us! Now, I have to say that I am a bit bias here, when I say I am a big fan of Teagan’s. But, to be fair, I will tell you the first reason is because Teagan and my youngest son, Garrett share a birthday!
But, then when you look at her smile and those adorable pig-tails in her hair, I think you all will become big fans of Teagan’s too!
Teagan was born April 27, 2007. She was my 3rd child. My 1st c-section because she was suppose to be around 11 lbs. 8oz. She weighed 8 lb. 9oz. The nurse suspected Down syndrome right away, due to soft signs. Slight low tone. I left the hospital thinking she didn’t have DS because a geneticist came and said 99% of the time she is there saying the child has DS, but in this case she didn’t think so because the other soft signs, the space between the big toe and others, my husband and other 2 children had and the curved pinky, I had. I thought they were just looking for something, saw my age, 42, and said Down syndrome. A few days later, we were told, that of the 20 cells tested, 4 came back with the extra chromosome and our lives were never the same. I have learned so much, not only about MDS and DS, but of other special needs too. I have met so many wonderful people. The kids inspire me to do better with my life.
Teagan now is 17 months. She is doing awesome in her milestones. She walked at 14 months by herself. She spoke 9 words by her 1st birthday. She sat by 6 months. Teagan continues to be big–in the 98% for a typical child. She is very social. She loves playing with her big sisters and the neighborhood kids, and other kids at GiGI’s house. (a playhouse and awareness center for those with Ds) She gets PT once a month and Speech once a week. She is learning to sign. She loves going to the zoo and making animal noises. She is a very curious little girl.
We just went to the last White Sox game in Chicago (picture included with her 2 sisters Kaylin 6 and Ashlin 4.). Teagan loved seeing all the people there and signed go for the Sox.

I feel so blessed to have Teagan in my life. She is such a cutie pie.
Thank you so much Charlene for sharing your story with us! I hope that it will give some families out there some encouragement to know that just because you have mosaic Down syndrome or Down syndrome, does not mean that you can’t accomplish great things! Teagan looks very happy and I can tell her sisters are happy to have her for their little sister too!
